In 2014, entrepreneur Michael Collins spotted a gaping hole in the marketplace. He felt venture capital was broken, only accessible to the ultrawealthy and institutional investors. His solution: He founded his own venture firm, Alumni Ventures (AV), with a different model. Instead of the $1 million minimum typical of traditional firms, AV investors had to commit as little as $25,000. And with funds marketed to accredited alumni from leading schools and often managed by a fellow alum, affinity was another point of distinction. These key points made venture much more accessible to a larger group of investors.
